Road Traffic Accidents

For anyone who experiences a road traffic accident (RTA), psychological rehabilitation can be just as important as physical rehabilitation in assisting recovery.It is not uncommon that at the time of the RTA you may experience a sense of everything being in slow motion, that your concentration is focused, you may even have extra power and strength.  This is because the flight or fight mechanism has kicked in which is the mind and body’s way of protecting you and helping you to cope with a frightening and potentially life threatening situation. Knowing about the type of reactions you may be having can be useful as it can help you to understand what is a normal reaction as opposed to an abnormal reaction. As everyone’s situation is unique, everyone will deal with trauma in a slightly different way but the following will give you a guide to the most common reactions:

* Confusion
* Shocked
* Stunned
* Anxious
* Restlessness
* Have flashbacks and nightmares
* Feelings of hopelessness
* Angry
* In despair
* Sadness
* Relief and elation at survival

For most people these symptoms will naturally reduce within a short period of time.  This is usually when a person has encountered no other trauma and is dependent on the seriousness of the RTA. Others will continue to experience stress reactions that may get worse over time leading to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Below are some reasons why a person may be vulnerable to PTSD as a result of a RTA.

* It was a life threatening event
* There have been fatalities
* The accident is pending an investigation, which may result in a criminal offence
* You have been charged with a criminal offence
* You have experienced or witnessed previous RTA’s
* You have had PTSD previously or have had other traumas
* Have experienced a childhood trauma
* You sustained a personal injury or disability
* You require on-going hospital treatment
